My Random Mariners Ruminations…

You know how I’m always moving and taking on new jobs?

Well, that’s what I’ve been doing….again.

I’m not moving across the country or anything like that, it’s definitely a local move but still a significant amount of packing and planning has been required.

I can’t express how depressing my new apartment looks right now due to the lack of furniture or wall decorations. Not only that but I don’t even have couches or dining tables or even a bed. I had to haul my best friend’s boyfriend’s futon and slept on it rather comfortably last night.

ANYWAY.

There really wasn’t a good reason for me to write my blogs anyway, considering my boys got swept by the big bad Texas Rangers a few days back. It was SO depressing.

First of all, Rob Johnson isn’t aware of his job description. Oh, I don’t know, I’m pretty sure it’s self explanatory but you are a catcher, Johnson. We don’t even expect you to hit; we just need you to catch. And you cannot do that. Thanks to you not being able to catch, we were swept. Seriously. Practice more. And no, don’t give me crap about being mean to Johnson because I used to be a catcher in college softball and I wasn’t even that bad. So hush.

Second, POOR Doug Fister. He has been nothing but AMAZING, a lot more consistent and impressive than anyone else in the team and he cannot get a deserving win to save his life. Our relief pitchers cannot help him out. We have a lead, Fister gets tired, whoever-relief-pitcher comes in, ties or blows the lead and Aardsma blows the game. Ok fine, that’s a little too harsh on Aardsma since he’s only had 2 blown saves so far but STILL. Fister DESERVES a WIN, people, let’s HELP HIM OUT A LITTLE!!!!

Thirdly, I am VERY impressed with most of our newbies. Cliff Lee obviously just came off of the DL but did a splendid job last week, Chone Figgins is just amazing (Thank you, Angels!) and he hits and hustles like a maniac giving Ichiro a run for his money, Milton Bradley is actually pretty good (surprise!), Brandon League is pretty good so far (I KNEW he was Asian! I did some research and found out he’s Japanese-American Yonsei from Hawaii!) and the only person that disappointed was Eric Byrnes…and he’s not even with us anymore. Shocker. He has so many opportune moments where he completely failed. PLUS apparently no one taught him how to successfully operate a SQUEEZE…which lost us a game.

Sorry about the non-picture entry today but I really have to get going to work now. Can I just say I’m SUPER excited for the Rays to be in town right now? Starting tonight, the Mariners will face the Rays. It’s the only time the Rays will be in town which makes me really depressed since I can’t be there……and (warning: girl comment) Evan Longoria is on my exclusive list of potential boyfriend/husband material and I won’t be able to see him.

SOB!!!!

The Rays will be facing Jason Vargas, Ryan Rowland-Smith and Cliff Lee.

Yes, they get to face Cliff Lee. Yikes!

Ok well until next time….

xoxo

**********************
So clearly I missed posting this yesterday and the Mariners have lost again the Rays.

….plus it was against Cliff Lee…..

……do you know how painful it is to be a Mariners fan right about now?

Probably not.

My First Game of 2010 ♥

I know that there’s a lot baseball going on but just for a few seconds, I want you to rewind back to last Friday and place yourself with me in beautiful Seattle, Washington.

DG has finally taken on Safeco Field for the first time in 2010. The phrase, “a kid in a candy store” comes to mind when I think of that fluttering feeling I got when I walked up those stairs from the CF entrance at Safeco with a Ken Griffey Jr “The Kid” bobblehead held tightly against my heart. I’m sure I looked like a freak as I just stood there in awe with a dumb smile on my face. How can one place make you feel so at home and content not mattering how many times you go there? That’s Safeco Field for me.

Safeco Field, will you make a studio apartment for me in one of your suites? Thank you ♥.

DetroitTigers.jpgThis day was exciting, nerve-wrecking, bittersweet, all at once. It was exciting because I was finally going to a Mariners game. because I was able to reunite with a dear friend from my college days that I haven’t seen in a few years and because I was going to get a Griffey Jr bobblehead. It was nerve-wrecking because the drive to Safeco Field is a bee-ai-tee-see-eich on gameday, because I was scared I won’t make it in time to get a bobblehead, and because the Mariners were facing Bonderman was pitching (he had an 1.80 ERA from his last start). It was bittersweet because the visiting team was the Tigers and most of you know I used to live there and am overcoming a break up of which my former other half is still in Michigan.

Anyway.

After Kaylee and I got our bobbleheads, we headed to the Team large_moose1.jpgStore where we purchased matching hoodies and Mariners headphones (I know, ridiculous). We strolled around the park, taking all the beauty of it in until we realized that the Mariners Moose was taking photos! We joined the lines with all the other 10 year olds because we have no shame. The moose was so furry and friendly; love him! Post Moose loving, we got our signature garlic fries and whole lemon lemonade and headed up to our seats.

Section 184.

DSCN1757.JPGThe LF Bleachers is by far my favorite place to sit. Sure, when my parents are in town and they’re willing to cough up $100 per person I like to sit elsewhere, but since that wasn’t happening on Friday, we sat in the 180’s area. It’s right above the bullpen which is nice because if a great pitcher from the visiting team was practicing, I can potentially accidentaly drop something on his head?

Ok, no. I’m not that mean.

If by any chance you (yes, you) were sitting in section 184 on Friday night, I have a message for you guys at the end of this entry.

I know this is quite the fast-forwarding but the Mariners won 11-2 against the Tigers that night. It’s kind of hard to write an entry about a game when a team scores that much. He did this, he did that, then he stole this and then that….

Let’s just say that everyone contributed one way or another to the 11, King Felix finally got his first well-deserved win and let the pictures do the talking,….

25410_429549592305_828782305_5442922_2760749_n.jpg                            Kaylee and I rejoicing right after we got our bobbelheads!

25410_429549607305_828782305_5442925_1649396_n.jpg                                          Welcome to Safeco Field! YAY!

25410_429549652305_828782305_5442933_395907_n.jpg                                            Felix warming up in the bullpen!

25410_429549662305_828782305_5442935_85192_n.jpg                             It was Jackie Robinson Day! Everyone was wearing #42 🙂

IMG00328.jpg                        YES, this is the Griffey Jr bobblehead! Are you jealous?

IMG00329.jpg

Ah, the (in?)famous Garlic Fries and whole lemon lemonade.

IMG00332.jpg                       Look how happy Kaylee looks with her Shishkaberries! 🙂

IMG00331.jpg

Happy to be reunited and with the bobblehead!

25410_429549807305_828782305_5442958_8199163_n.jpg                                     Yes, we scored ELEVEN on the little kittehs.

25410_429549817305_828782305_5442959_3717745_n.jpg       Oh, you talented person, you. Oh, and his picture was the only decent looking picture.

25410_429549762305_828782305_5442952_219444_n.jpg       I LOVE it when they do their little dance routine! Do they do this at other parks too?

25410_429549797305_828782305_5442956_2558095_n.jpg

                                  What’s a reunion without a goofy picture?

DSCN1763.JPG                                                     Must I explain?

If you can’t tell from the pictures, the game was amazing. Did it cost me a fortune to eat at Safeco? Yes. Did it cost me an arm and a leg to park anywhere near Safeco? Yes. Did it take me 1.5 hours just to get out of the vicinity of 1st Ave? Yes. Did I get home at 1:30AM just to have the alarm blast in my ear at 7:00AM? Yes.

But does any of that matter?

NOPE!

I’m a slave to the game of baseball, everyone! ♥

….till next time. 🙂

P.S

Dear Section 184 from 04/16/10:

A big thank you. I always tend to have the worst luck and have some d-bag (or multiple) sitting around me that makes the game a little less enjoyable but I can honestly say that last night the crowd was great. Who knows if any 184-ers are reading this? I’m just taking a shot and thanking you. The kids were well behaved and the adults surrounding us were enthusiatic yet not overboard. The four guys behind us were making the most hilarious comments and I also enjoyed that a lot. I figured it would be more than creepy to turn around and say, “Hey you guys were real funny, thanks!”. Plus, our section started the extremely successful wave at Safeco! HOLLERRRRRR! 🙂

xoxo,

Deena

[[Some pictures courtsey of Kaylee Engels aka my Mariners partner in crime]

We still have 159 games, right?

Right? RIGHT?

I was trying to hold off on the blog until the Mariners started their winning streak but since that doesn’t seem like it’s happening anytime soon, I figure I’d give in and finally write an entry. It’s long overdue and I’ve missed this mlblogosphere and everyone in it.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am PSYCHED (I know, poor choice of vocabulary) that baseball season is underway.

9272733_420x300_mb_art_R0.jpgOpening Day
was marvelous, I couldn’t have asked for anything more. The Mariners were on the cover of ESPN, despite Cliff Lee’s placement on the DL everyone else seemed to be in tip top shape, I found a few friends to go to a sports bar with me to watch the game, I wore my new t-shirt, I had an amazing margarita and to top it all off, the Mariners won! They won against the Oakland Athletics 5-3. Ichiro got a hit (of course), Griffey had a hit, Kotchman was the MVP, Aardsma saved the game…..all in all it was a fantastic day for me.

However… (que depressing music)

That was basically the start and also end to my happy, Mariners victory days.

Will somebody please tell me (nicely) what happened to my boys?

Because it can’t possibly be that the Texas Rangers or Oakland Athletics (no less), are better than the Mariners! (I mean this in the nicest way, Rangers/A’s fans)

That’s just ludacris.

So does anyone else have any suggestions? I’m at a complete loss. It makes me want to hurl as I write this but we are looking at a 2-5 record in the face at the moment. We lost the series to the A’s and of course we lost the series to the Rangers. I honestly don’t even want to know how the Angels are doing because they can’t possibly be doing any worse than the Mariners. We are bottom and out, man.

Yes, yes I know we have 150-something games left and I should keep my chin up (blah, blah, blah) but the Mariners aren’t the Yankees, you know? They’re not really known for doing horribly the first half of the season and then magically start winning every single game post All-Star.

I’m pulling my hair out, people.

You know what? Enough negativity. I need to calm down, cross my fingers, pray to the baseball Gods and just be the #1 Mariners fan that I am.

Which brings me to great news.

splash_berry_sticks.jpgAlthough I’m a little bitter about working all day and all night today which results in not being able to attend the Mariners Opening Day, I’m happy to say that this Friday I will not only be at Safeco Field with a friend I haven’t seen in years, but I will have a Ken Griffey Jr “The Kid” bobblehead in my hand…and hopefully some garlic fries, lemonade and shishkaberries (left).

So, if any of you reading this is going to be at the Mariners game on Friday, say hi if you see me! I’m nice and I don’t bite, I promise 🙂  I’ll be sporting this:

83158180.jpg
IMG00305.jpg

1. The picture quality is horrible and I realize this.
2. I’m not one to take self-portraits but it had to be done.

Also, I was recently given the opportunity to write for a fan-based sports website called Fanhuddle…of course, on the Seattle Mariners section. I believe Virginia, aka Southernbelle is also a writer on Fanhuddle but for the New York Yankees. It’s a very unique sports website run and written by dedicated fans so you should check it out sometime.

Click Here for Fanhuddle – Seattle Mariners

Well everyone, it’s been nice and I’ll be back more often now that baseball season is happening. If anything, I’ll be sure to update with fun pictures from Friday’s game.

Until then….

xoxo

Dear Santa…♥

Dear Santa,

world_series_trophy_2.jpgSince I’ve been a lot more nice than naughty this whole year, here’s a list of everything I want.
First of all, it’s pretty obvious but I would absolutely adore for the Mariners to at least be crowned AL West Champions but why stop there, right?

I want the Mariners to win the WORLD SERIES.

Yes, I said it.

I want the Mariners to win their first World Series Championship ever. Seriously though, with Ichiro, Felix, Wilson and our newest additions Figgins and Lee?

Come on, now. This would be the year to win it, if ever!

Santa, the Mariners obviously have what it takes, so will you please supply them with that extra push?
 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

bay_lifeguard.jpg
I also would love love looooove this pictured player to join the Mariners.

Are the chances slim?

Well….

………………..yes, but that’s why I’m asking you, Santa!

How perfect would he be in our very empty left field?

Perfect would be an understatement. If we can get Bay in the Mariners, pssshh, I probably don’t even have to ask Santa for a World Series championship!

On a side note, isn’t this picture funny? A major leaguer life guard? Sounds good to me ♥

  ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

injuries%20image.jpg

Thirdly,

No injuries.

For any Mariner.

Must I elaborate?

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

troopsribbon_thumb.jpgBut….my biggest and most important delivery I need from you, Santa, is for you to enlarge your sleigh, recruit some more reindeers, pile all the U.S soldiers that are overseas and bring them back home safe and sound.

That may take a few trips but I hear you deliver presents all across the world overnight. :]

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

Hopefully that’s not too much to ask…

….what? I’ve been naughty this year?

Dangit.

Post Season Mariners Update 2

How dare I get numb to the notion of a cold, baseball-less season?

I have such amazing news about the Mariners….

….which I’m sure everybody and their brothers know about already but what the hey.

No exciting build-ups, no beating around the bush….

MARINERS SIGNED CLIFF LEE!

url-757394.jpgCan I just say, WOW? I knew we had plenty of money this off-season to acquire some great players but Cliff Lee? I’m almost overwhelmed by the news. Lee rocked the World Series beating the Yankees not only once, but twice, and not only that, but Lee has a 5-1 3.49 ERA at Safeco Field! This Cy Young winning southpaw with a Cy Young contender (Felix, of course), both backed up by one of the league’s best defense, we are going to have a vicious starting rotation.

Watch out AL West, we’re gonna take all of you down.

chone-figgins.jpgOh and to put the cherry on top of this wonderful Mariners sundae, we acquired Chone Figgins (he’ll be sporting a No.9 jersey) last week from the Angels. He is the guy I always get nervous about when we play the Angels…gosh, not having to worry about him is going to be awesome. Figgins signed a four year, $36 million deal with a vesting option for 2014. Figgins was a third baseman for the Angels which brings up the question as to where he’ll be defending next season if Beltre chooses to stay. Personally, I think he would own second base but I would hate to have to see Lopez benched for that. As far as I’m concerned, the only spot available right now is left field and with his third baseman arm, I figure he would excel. With his above-average batting and last year’s career high runs and doubles, I have no doubt he’ll be sending Ichiro home more often than not.

Our starting lineup will consist of Ichiro batting first (duh), Figgins, Lopez/Gutierrez, Branyan (still crossing my fingers for that one)….

…and of course our deathly pitching rotation.

Fellow Mariners fans, my baseball itch is worsening as we speak! The 2010 season is going to be…enthralling, captivating, engrossing, and riveting; I can hardly wait!

Now for all non-Mariners fans, you should probably be afraid.

Very much afraid.

I end with an evil laugh.

mr-burns-evil-laugh.jpg                                                        Mwahahahaha.

Post Season Mariners Update 1

Everyday I think, ‘I must blog today!’…but of course don’t due to the fact that I’m working late or hanging out with friends or watching TV….pretty much everything but.

However, with an eggnog latte in one hand, I’ve finally sat my butt down tonight to update everyone on what’s going on here in the already rainy Emerald City.

Copy_of_peppermint_mocha_thumb.jpgSeriously though, my eggnog latte consumption these past few weeks have been beyond ridiculous.

You’re welcome, Starbucks!

Back to the point. Points, actually. 5 of them.

1. Ichiro receives his 9th Gold Glove Award. He’s 1 Gold Glove Award away from tying the franchise record which is held by Ken Griffey Jr with 10 Gold Gloves. Not to toot my own Mariners horn but am I surprised about this? Not really. Toot toot! Congratulations anyway, Ichiro! This just adds to how amazing you are!

2. Branyan declines a one year offer from the Mariners. Personally, I’m actually pretty depressed about this. If you’ve read my previous entries, you know I am a huge fan of Russell. I’m crossing my fingers no other team offers him a 2+ year deal or else he’s leaving the Mariners! Am I truly this selfish? Yes I am. Sorry, Russell.

3. Griffey returns for one more year. As a Mariners fan, I am ecstatic that he’s returning for the 2010 season. As a practical baseball fan, I feel like maybe it’s a gamble. Terms of the deal wasn’t disclosed but could the salary have been used more wisely towards someone else? Maybe. Please though, don’t get me wrong. I think Jr truly brings the team together and has a great impact on the organization; I do ♥ him!

4. Ichiro receives his third Silver Slugger Award. Just like his 200+ hits, it seems like the awards keep coming too! For those that are not familiar, this award goes to the best offensive players voted on by MLB managers and coaches. Again, am I surprised? Well, if I’m talking about how I’m surprised he doesn’t have more than three, then yes, I’m surprised. Really? He only has 3? Hmm.

5. Jack Wilson signs a two-year deal with the Mariners. Woohoo! I’m very excited about this although I knew the Mariners didn’t acquire him just for the last few months of the ’09 season. Matt, aren’t you excited? You can keep wearing your M’s jacket around with pride :] What I was unaware of was that Wilson had won the Fielding Bible Award as best fielding shortstop this past season. I’m definitely not surprised but I feel horrible as a self-proclaimed baseball fanatic that I didn’t know about this “Fielding Bible Award“. Is that bad?

Well, I’m beyond pleased with the progress the Mariners are making already and definitely excited for some more to come!

I don’t think I congratulated the Yankees for winning the World Series this year. I know, really belated but congratulations anyway! Congratulations to the Phillies too, Both teams made the WS so fun to watch ♥

Does someone have any advice or an anti-itch product for my baseball itch? :]
th_1701907_thumb.jpgFor godssake, baseball season ended like five seconds ago and I’m already having withdrawals. Perhaps there are therapists out there for off-season baseball withdrawals? Maybe that’s my calling; getting a PhD specializing in Off-Season Baseball Withdrawal Therapy. Sounds amazing already.

Anywho.

I don’t watch football (more like I don’t understand football) so I suppose I’ll have to settle for the NBA. I generally only watch the 4th quarter of an NBA game but I suppose I really should start supporting my boys. Much love to the Portland Blazers

Blazers_thumb.jpgI hope all you Yankees fans are still enjoying the delicious after-taste of the WS Championship and for all other fans, I hope your teams are conjuring up something good for 2010. I’ll be back soon for more Post Season M’s updates!

                                                               xoxo

Thank you boys…♥

I’m slowly adjusting back into the working girl life (thank you for the wishes, I got the job!) in the best coast…I mean, west coast, while I, together with my Grandpa, sulk that baseball season is practically over.

th_1701907_thumb.jpgFor Mariners fans anyway.

Now call me cheesy but I got teary-eyed watching the final game of the Mariners season. The boys won 4-3 against the Texas Rangers and so much happened in the game. Not one player gets honorable mention because practically everyone did. Felix got his 19th win this season while he vies for the Cy Young, David Aardsma closed the game, Ichiro had a hit and a run, Griffey had a hit, Guttierrez scored some runs, Lopez scored the winning run, Batista had a perfect 8th inning and Wakamatsu led the team for their 85th win of the season.

Mariners-web-logo_1__thumb.jpg

I cannot believe the Mariners had such a great rebound year after last year’s 101 game loss. With Bavasi gone, that should have been a good sign anyway, but when the new GM chose Wakamatsu, there were definitely some speculation as to how he was going to perform as the new skipper for a disconnected 40-man-40-cab team after the 2008 season. I hate to say it but the 2008 Mariners were plain sad to watch. No player chemistry or respect, no smiles or hugs….and of course barely any wins. I am a Mariners fan through thick and thin but no season was as tough as the ’08 season.

Hiring Jack Zduriencik (GM) and Don Wakamatsu was truly the best change the organization could have made.

Now only if they would hire me as the assistant coach, right? :] dance_thumb.jpg

Actually, I’ve always wanted to organize a dance team for the Mariners. I admit, one of the many things I like about baseball is that there are no cheerleaders or dancers dressed in close-to-nothing making provocative moves. However, as a former dancer (jazz/hip hop) and a Mariners fanatic, I would have so much fun making up a dance team for the M’s! It would consist of dancers of all ages, we’d wear Mariners jerseys and have dance moves that everyone in the stadium can learn! Oh I wish ♥

Anyway……

As the Yankees and Phillies compete for the World Series Championship, I truly wish the best for both teams! I’m going to have to jump on the Phillies band-wagon though, because I’m assuming the Yankees have enough intense supporters and I think the Phillies can use some DG oomph ♥ Good luck to both teams, though!

P92700082_thumb.jpgAlso, I’d like to say a special farewell to my favorite catcher, Kenji Johjima. The news came as a surprise when the fans were informed that he was breaking his 3 year contract to return to Japan. In a nutshell, there was some controversey with the reason of breaking the contract. Joh had told the Mariners he was leaving due to the fact that he wasn’t close to his family. However, Joh told the Japanese media that he was leaving because he wasn’t going to get any playing time next year with Johnson taking most of the spot-light this season. Joh had told them he wanted to be their main catcher, not their back-up. According to a Japanese article I read, you can’t opt out of a contract just because you aren’t satisfied with your position or playing time; yet you can opt out if it’s for a family issue. Apparently Mariners management are not happy with Johjima and his communication discrepancy between the Japanese media and the U.S media. Ah well. As a fan, none of that matters. I just have to say I’ll miss him and wish him the best back home in Japan. I’m sure he’ll continue to play amazing baseball.

johjima-k-ap-080402-392.jpgBut jeez, now I have to buy a new Mariners t-shirt. I’m starting to accumulate ex-Mariners t-shirts in my bottom drawer. It’s kind of a dilemma for a Mariners fan to choose whose t-shirt they should buy without it becoming unwearable after a season. I’m guessing I’m good to go for a few years if I buy an Ichiro t-shirt.

41f1HVH27-L__AA280_.jpg
As far as next season….

……will the Mariners go for 85+ wins next season? Is Griffey returning for perhaps one more season? Is Johnson’s hip surgery going to affect his performance next season? Is Moore going to be a sufficient enough catcher to fill the shoes of a departing Johjima? Will Ichiro keep breaking his own record and go for 10 years in a row to hit 200+ hits? Will Felix get 20 wins? Will Aardsma have 45+ saves once again? Is Beltre coming back to man third base? Which J.Wilson (Jack or Josh) will rise above during the off-season to dominate as SS? Will Gutierrez continue to build on his successful season? Is Branyan signing with the Mariners and will he lead in HRs again despite his back? Will Zduriencik and Wakamatsu find an efficient third-base coach?

As you can see, fans and I have a lot of questions. Yet, all I want to do now is sit back and reminisce on the fantastic season the Mariners have given us this season.

Thank you boys for giving me a reason to be passionate!

Rest up though, because spring training will be here before you know it ♥

xoxo
